      181 Context
-Nowadays, haptic rendering technologies become a strategic component in various systems where the human user is involved. However, the different technological and commercial constraints (e.g., working space, cost) limit the large deployment of this technology in commercial and applied solutions (e.g., games, telesurgery). Among these constraints, the intrusiveness of haptic devices is a major limit since it constraints the dexterity of manipulation and the rendering and interaction transparency. Different projects tried to propose non-intrusive devices for the interaction in the 3D spaces in order to improve the interaction transparency and available working space. Among the emerging stimulation technologies, the use of the air jet is a breakthrough compared to the conventional approaches. In fact, this approach provides a tactile feedback without a contact with the mechanical structure. +...

-: The final part of the project concerns the use of the haptic device for the interaction with a virtual agent in ambient environments. This approach provides a non-intrusive and contactless haptic interaction with the ambient environment. Moreover, it increases the standard audio and visual feedbacks with a tactile and active stimulation to support various type of information such as warning and affective messages, or guidance gestures for learning tasks. +...
      183 Objectives
-The objective of this project is to design and study a tactile interface based a mobile air jet system for a non-contact stimulation with a more important action field (>10cm) to provide an important workspace and dexterous manipulation. The proposed concept consists to combine: 1) an air jet system, controlled through the intensity and frequency of the jet’s flow rate; and 2) a robotic structure to orient and move the air jet according the user’s actions and the features of perceived data. Our approach exploits the main zone of the air jet, in which the flow is governed by the inertial forces. It enables the tactile stimulation with an important distance while providing satisfactory flow’s features (spatial accuracy, applied pressure, etc.). The final haptic platform will enable the access to new perception and interaction strategies. For instance, it enables the use of the hand’s palm for the data perception instead a punctual contact with the conventional interfaces. +...
